The fun starts in Sedalia, Missouri
Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. Ragtime music, the first original composition music America can call its own, is characterized by its jaunty rhythms and whimsical mood. Americans first heard ragtime in 1893 at the World's Fair in Chicago. At the same time the music was first receiving public notice, the future King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin, moved to our own Sedalia, Missouri for June performances.
Missouri State Fair. Just two blocks down the street from American Inn - Sedalia is the fairgrounds for Missouri's Annual State Fair starting the second Thursday of August. The fairgrounds consist of 396 acres of exhibit areas and 2,200-site campground and historic facilities. Being one of the largest 11-day fairs in America, the state fair has become one of the hallmarks of Sedalia. The Fairground also hosts many other events throughout the year such as livestock shows, camping events, sporting events, horse racing, car racing and truck pulls.
Memorial Pow-wow. Held each July, this authentic intertribal American Indian gathering features three days of Native American culture - dancing, food, and arts and crafts, including silver jewelry, furs, poetry and paintings. The event is held on a Friday night, Saturday and Sunday at the Missouri State Fairground's west campgrounds. There's always plenty of parking available along with tasty concessions.
Midwest Stud Ram Sale. The Midwest stud ram sale takes place every year starting June 20th through July 28st, at Missouri State Fairground. Classes for this event are spring ram lambs, spring ewe lambs, fall ram lambs, fall ewe lambs, yearling rams and yearling ewes.
Car Show. The Annual Car Show comes to Sedalia during the month of June around the 8th or 10th. People come from all over to show their vintage and antique cars. The Car Show starts every year on Hwy 65.
MS-150 Bike Race. The MS-150 bike race arrives every year in September. Participants ride their bike from a given starting point to a final destination. Anybody 12 and older can register for this exciting race. There is a small fee to enter but funds go to a selected charity each year.
